WELCOME AFRICA
Under the leadership of President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Ghana is privileged to host a historic sporting event in the year 2024. As one of the founding members of the African Games, Ghana deems this a great privilege, as it is the first time the nation gets to host such a major sporting event. The Games will be held in Accra, the Nation’s
capital.
The sport of chess was introduced in the African Games at the 2003 edition held in Nigeria. It continued to be part of games in subsequent editions, except for 2015 edition held in Congo
Brazzaville.

After the withdrawal of Equatorial Guinea from organising of the 2019 edition, the Kingdom of Morocco, with its expertise and long experience in the organisation of major sporting events, proposed to organize the 13th edition in 2019 under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohamed VI and on the occasion of the commemoration of the National Youth Day of which chess was a sports code.
After many interventions including Mr. Arkady Dvorkovich, President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), Major General Ahmed Nasser Mohamed, President of the African Union of Sports, The Minister of Youth & Sports of the Republic of Ghana accepted the introduction of the Chess sport as a discipline in the 13th African Games to be held in Accra, Ghana from 8th to 23rd March, 2024.
Following this decision, all the activists of this noble sports showed their will to contribute to the success of this event.
We take note, and salute, the decision of Mr. Arkady Dvorkovich, President of FIDE, to support
this edition both financially and logistically.
It is also an opportunity to signal the will of the Republic of Ghana Chess Association and the Africa Chess Confederation to mobilize all human and material resources for the success of this edition.
Ghana ready to offer Africa an experiential Games that will provide memories to last a lifetime for all contingents and dignitaries. Our mandate is to host an event that will engender positive rivalry among the youth of Africa and project a united Africa to the world. The 13th African Games will seek to promote Africa’s art and culture, which will in effect lead to socio-economic development across the continent.
